After coming home, I did some light research and discovered that the Ugli fruit was apparently discovered in Jamaica, growing wild, and that it came about by the hybridizing of a grapefruit and a tangerine.
So, I went ahead and peeled it..
Even inside it's a strange looking fruit; it looks like the skin is a little too big for the insides. But I've no complaints about how very juicy it was. The grapefruit-influence is definitely present in the flavor, but the tangerine-sweetness brings about a good balance. Overall, it still is pretty tart and the after-taste is strongly grapefruit but, all in all, it was a pleasant citrus experience :)

What an interesting piece of produce. I am glad you tried it out as I have never heard of it before. Maybe they call it "Ugli" because of the way it looks. Still, that's rather cruel. The poor fruit must have low self-esteem. Perhaps that's why it's bitter. :) I'm going to try one if I ever see one here in Colorado. :)
Hmmmm. I may have to try one of those now. I didn't realize they were citrus, so that means that I wouldn't even have to figure out how to eat the strange insides, like you do on a pomegranate. You have broadened my horizons!
I have never heard of such a fruit. Have to admit my first thoughts were along the same lines as Chilly Beans'. Glad it turned out okay.
Hmm.. I bet it does have low self-esteem, that's why it wears it's skin baggy :)
I'm glad that I could introduce you guys to it! Even though I see it all the time, I don't think I would have ever gotten for myself if the circumstances hadn't been just as they were the other night :)
Pomegranates are something I've never had the nerve to try yet though... Apparently you suck the juicy fruit part off of the seeds and even though it cuts up your mouth, the taste makes that ok. (this description from a friend who absolutely loves them and looks forward to seeing them in the store every fall when they're in season)
