Garden Update

My little patio garden has been doing well. Here is a little corner from June (before we went on our trip).. all green and thriving
:

There was a little bit of a slump when we went away for the family reunion/road trip.. I tried a few things to help - setting the flowers and my tomato in buckets of water, but my soaker hoses didn't come in time to help. All my efforts probably kept things from dying completely, but things looked more than a little droopy when we got back. Happily, in the last few weeks, most of the plants have made a remarkable comeback.

I was really excited to see that my morning glories started blooming. They've climbed nicely, albeit a little clumpy all at the top, but it seemed to take a while for them to decide to bloom. So far, I haven't found any seeds from the flowers like I did last year, but we'll see if anything changes before the end of the season.

I've gotten a few cucumbers from the top row of the wall planters, though I've decided the plants were too close together to really thrive. Still, I may try again next year with just two plants, one on each side of the planter. Fresh cucumbers are yummy, even if they are a little strangely shaped.

My tomato plant has really grown tall.. but it doesn't seem too interested in producing fruits. There are about three or four green tomatoes, of various sizes, that are hanging out (having survived Moon's sporadic, overly-excited, premature harvesting) but, so far, they don't seem inclined to turn red. We'll see how they do in the next while before it cools off for real.

The caterpillars came back! Sadly, I didn't plant enough for a resurgence (we counted about eight at the time of this picture, some big some small) so I suspect they'll munch what's left of my parsley and move on.

Still, all in all, not a bad season! Now that I've done it a few times, I starting to get a good feel for what plants and dirt works in which planters. I'm planning to start a garden journal to write down how things go in more detail, so I can remember better year to year. It's not much, but I do enjoy it!

Green fried tomatoes are a thing, maybe you could do that if they never get red. The flowers look really nice!
