So, I've got this shop. I know I talk about it a lot, but it's rather time consuming - in the very best way, so it's often on my mind. I have so many ideas that are constantly popping into my head that I can hardly keep up with them all! Perhaps it's a touch cliche, but there's just something incredibly satisfying in seeing these nebulous ideas of mine turn into something concrete and tangible.
My latest venture has been branching out from printing just on baby clothes an onto making car seat canopies. I've been talking about it for a while, and even after I finally decided to do it, it's taken me a little while to get this first project finished (a few more details on that over here), but I have finally managed to get the thing mostly finished.
I made the inside of patchwork of fabrics, which I thought turned out quite well:
The outside was to be a pink tie-dye base with a printing of Pink Elephants Parading. I ended up drawing the elephants about three times before I was satisfied with how they looked, but in the end, I was quite pleased with them too:
However, the trouble came with the final assembly; I'm going to have to work on my straight stitch.. heh. The edges are not quite perfectly straight, and the area where I closed up the two sides has puckers..

Still, for the most part, it's not too shabby for a first run through. The real deal breaker though, the one that insures this particular canopy will never be seen in my shop, is the material I chose for the front.
Summer is coming so, in my choice of materials, I was going for light-weight. Too late, I discovered that the material I used for the tie-dye portion was so light-weight it was see-through. D'oh!

Conclusion? Not a bad first attempt really.. but more practice is required. Still, too much work has been put into this for me to just ditch it. Into the pile it'll go, with the other too-cool-to-toss-but-not-cool-enough-to-sell items. I'm actually starting to have a bit of a collection!
Whenever we get around to having a kid, the poor thing is going to have quite the menagerie of my tossed off duds!

That is very cool! I love the car seat covers and wished I had seen them in time to make it worth buying one. (They're only useable for a year at most and I saw them when Bluebird was about 7 months old.)
What did you do with the straps? Did you put anything on them like big old buttons?
I didn't actually get that far, but the plan was to piece together the straps so they'd match the inside, then use velcro to close them up. Maybe I'll get that far with this next one :)
