Ward Talent Show!

At church, different auxiliaries take turns planning activities for the congregation. Last month, it was the women's group (the Relief Society)'s turn. We opted to host a Talent Show!

I'm currently in charge of the activity committee, so my ladies and I put together all the details. Our hope was to keep things from getting super long, so we had a limit on the number of acts, but we invited people to display their talents as well. Everyone was welcome to participate, and there were kids and adults all signed-up to go on stage. For displays, we got some quilts, and afghans. Also, there were some yummy cookies and a beautiful cake.

As I was heading up this whole crazy activity, I decided it was only fair and right that I participate in it, and so I put together some acts. What was extra fun was that my family joined in the fray and we totally represented!

I've been taking guitar lessons for the past several months, and things have been going pretty well! My teacher is always encouraging me to get out and perform for people, so this seemed like a good opportunity. It wasn't perfect but, happily, they were a friendly audience:

Hubby really enjoys reading the boys bedtime stories (when they aren't melting down 'cuz it's bedtime).  And this one is a favorite at our house.... it seemed to be a hit here too:

Things were a little touch and go with Townshend's participation.. historically, he's not been one for performing. The whole while leading up to the activity, he was mostly sure he wanted to do things, but we were still deciding what, exactly he'd do just a couple hours before things were to start. In the end, he went with a demonstration of rock painting:

And my final act ('cuz, at heart, I'm a ham).. I did a silly Cinderella lip-sync:

The activity went really well.. all our planning paid off and we kept the whole thing to about 1.5 hours (which was the goal), plus the program order was inspired; we ended with a big finale - three guys in our ward threw together a band and rocked out. We had a bass, lead guitar and drums, and on their last song they invited the bishopric onto the stage, which lead to a full-on dance party to close the night.

Our ward hadn't had a talent show for grownups in years and years, and it seemed to go over well. There were people talking about doing it again soon! I'm totally down with performing again, though I wouldn't be sorry to let someone else head the planning committee.. Still, it felt good to see how well things went. A success, indeed.
