Home Project

Back when we were looking to buy this place, we looked at another townhouse unit in this building. Most of the units are basically the same, just mirrored versions of each other. The other one we considered was on the other side. The color scheme was a little different, and the kitchen had a backsplash which I really liked; it dressed up the space nicely.. however, what sold us on this one over here was that this side of the building is shielded from the nearby busy street and *much* quieter and a backsplash is not a difficult addition.

here is the before picture (with the standard clutter)

So, pretty early on in our marriage, we decided that to celebrate our anniversary we'd gift ourselves something for the house. Last year, we beautified our downstairs bathroom. This year we decided it was time to get ourselves a backsplash for the kitchen.

Here we go!

The upside of doing the backsplash ourselves was that we got to pick it! If you watch HGTV, they seem to be under the impression that the best backsplash is a subway tile type. However, me being me, I wanted something different (plus I suspect that this subway tile craze will eventually pass and will look "so 2017" and I'm wanted something a little more timeless.)

Coming along!

I've about decided that the gray is my favorite color. It's been my choice for a number of home projects and I've always been really happy with the result. However, not everyone shares my vision initially. I cracks me up how often people look at me sideways when I tell them I'm decorating with gray. This project was no different.

just waiting for some grout...

We opted to hire out the labor for the project, so I met with our tile-setter to talk details and all that fun stuff. And he joined the ranks of those skeptics who became converted once the project was done.

Done and done.

I love it. The shape is fun, the different shades of gray are beautiful. The backsplash ties the room together so nicely. It's a small thing, but I love what it's done with the place! And the tile-setter, as he was finished, declared it's some of his best work and agreed that the color is great. Yay for home projects success!
