Building Custom Storage

So those cabinets, under our great build-in entertainment center, are very deep. We figured those would be the most logical place to keep the movies, but they were so deep, nothing I could find in stores was quite long enough to fill the space. So, I busted out my amateur carpentry skills and made some.

There may or may not have been a little trial and error initially, but eventually I figured out a design that worked well enough (hooray for Home Depot and their sawing station; sawed through those fat, end pieces like it was nothing):

Originally, I made five boxes and I thought that would be enough to hold our movies. Hubby and I had guessed that we had probably 100ish. But, since I wanted to be sure that I had enough boxes before I got to the painting stage, I dug out all our DVDs from storage and counted. Turns out we needed a few more than five...

Next, came the primer coat. (Bare wood is thirsty!):

And, finally, some color (and with only minimal damage to the garage)!

Once the paint was fully set, I added some felt strips on the bottom (for protection):

Then came the label holders/handles:

And then they were done! (hallelujah)

Oh man, this ended up being a much larger project than I'd originally anticipated, but I am really happy with how they turned out. And (*knock on wood*), with an extra, empty one, these should last us a long, long time!
