Recycling

I've got this old computer.. I've been holding on to it a while now. It lives under my desk, unplugged and collecting dust.

It's redundant; I have a new, quieter, zippier computer that is the main and most frequently used computer in my life (unless you count my work computer, but lets not go there, my home computer might get jealous).

You might be asking yourself, why is it that I keep this old computer? It's under my desk and taking up my foot space...

Well, it's quite simple really. It's been formatted (thanks to my Hubby), so I'm not worried about personal information getting out. More, it's just that I'm environmentally minded enough that I cannot just dump this old computer into the trash; Chicago city water is bad enough already without my adding toxic materials to the mix. I did look up a local computer recycling place but their hours are prohibitive: Mon, Tues, Fri 10am-3pm. Sun 11am-5pm. I work full-time and also choose not to frequent places of business on Sundays, to observe the Sabbath. All my choice, yes. But it makes donating to this place inconvenient... so I've kept the computer.

However, lately, my Hubby and I have been on a clean-out-everything-and-declutter kick and we've been purging things from every room in the house. I convinced him to clean out his closet and to toss old, worn out clothes and clutter, and he's been a really good sport about it. And it's not like I haven't been doing the same.... but the more and more this went on, room by room, the sillier I felt about having this old, redundant computer under my desk.

So, finally, today I happened to have the day off work. And, while out and about running errands and taking care of things that needed to be done during daylight hours, I made my way over to the recycling place and disposed of that old computer.

my chair fits under my desk again!!

Hooray!!

Hurray for chairs under desks! I didn't even know that they had computer recycle places. I'll have to keep that in mind the next time we have computer parts to get rid of. (The whole things never survive long around here... bits get recycled into the new computers.)

Apparently, somewhere in the city, there are those that'll give you money for bringing in your computer, but I went to a close and convenient one. I paid a little bit ($10) but that's mostly just to process the toxic parts. I'm ok with chipping in a little to be good to the earth :)

James and I are in the process of doing that ourselves, so I appreciate you posting this since it has reminded me of the computers we need to recycle. We have a few that need to be recycled, along with printers, toner cartridges, and old monitors (most of which have been hanging out in closets or in the back of James' car - we're bad, I know!). Yea for purging out old unwanted items!!

Hehe.. crazy how quickly the piling up happens though! Good luck with your de-cluttering :)
