Perseverance

This past weekend I had the opportunity to say a final good-bye to my grandma.

Funerals are interesting things. On one hand, I'm exceptionally sad that she's gone; I will miss her greatly. Yet, at the same time, I find it very comforting to know that there is life after this one. My grandma was a widow for more than 20 years and I have no doubt that she was met by, and overjoyed to see, my grandfather (among others). So, my sadness isn't for her, but for the empty place that she left here.

As I was leaving Chicago, it was a chilly, drizzley day; the dreary clouds overhead matching my mood. Yet, there was this juxtaposition of my two feelings -- sadness and comfort. As I headed for the train that would take me to the airport, this patch of weeds caught my eye:

Every Mother's Day, my uncle and his family would come and plant flowers in Grandma's yard. This year, for that weekend, too much time was spent at the hospital and the project was never completed. Still, we wanted to see that this tradition was carried out one last time.

I knew beforehand about this project, so maybe it was that I had flowers on the brain already, but seeing these weeds, persevering, raised my spirits; despite the wood and concrete, they just looked so vibrant and hopeful. It made me find greater happiness in going out there: I would help plant some flowers for my grandma.

Before we planted...

...all done.

What a great tradition, and I am so glad you were able to do it one last time. I love the picture of the weeds too. They are so vibrant, and so green. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, but I, too, am glad that she is in a better place with no more pain. Love you Kate!

Thanks :)
Despite the sad occasion bringing us all together, it really was a great weekend full of family.

So sorry about your grandma, but I love what you did with flowers. I planted a tree in my yard when my Grandpa died and it made him feel more permanent and close to me. Just a symbol of the real deal, I guess.

Steph - That's cool that you planted a tree. It's definitely a nice reminder.
Grandma's house will eventually be sold, but we planted some perennials so that the flowers would keep coming back; lots of pretty pink, just for her.
