Weighing My Options

Right now, my hubby and I are a two-car family. It's not so much out of necessity as much as it is just a carryover from before we were married.

His Car:

2004 Subaru Forrester
My Car:

2005 Chevy Cavalier (Maggie)

However, realistically speaking, we could get by just fine with one. And, for a while now, we've been seriously considering consolidating and becoming a single-car family, but that's where things get complicated. How to pick which one should go?

Both cars have been good to us. When compared, they do have their individual pros and cons, but we're each quite fond of our own... and not so much a fan of the other. So, simply selling one isn't really an option. So we concluded that we'll have to trade them both in and find a different one we both like.

This has brought about a pretty serious round of car research. (Hooray for Consumer Reports!) It's been an entertaining process. Turns out, we both look for different things in a car. Of course there are all sorts of things to factor in, but when you boil it down to what there MUST be, I'm all about smallness and gas mileage and he's more interested in what the inside has to offer (i.e. where the adapters are located). Both things are very important to consider and, as it happens, there's a pretty wide range of cars where our number one concerns overlap.

So, we've finished the first wave of research and have narrowed the list down to 7 potential choices; all of them rank about equally overall... Now we've come the point where the usefulness of online research ends. Now we have to go take a look inside. So, for the next little while, our weekends will be filled with us checking things out in person. I'm pretty excited!

Anyway, so in all of this, the cuteness level hasn't really been much of a factor in our decision making process.. but I'm curious, and just for giggles, I thought I'd pose the question: Which of these do you guys think is cutest?

(in alphabetical order)
1) Honda Civic

2) Pontiac Vibe

3) Scion xD

4) Subaru Impreza

5) Suzuki SX4

6) Toyota Corolla

7) Toyota Matrix

Thoughts anyone?

Hands down the Scion xD. It is WAY cute...and small (which will work for you) and loaded with fun extras that come standard (which will work for your husband). James and I almost purchased a Scion xD, but instead we went with the xB. It is the best car I have ever had and we just love it. It looks small on the outside but is quite roomy on the inside. I would totally recommend going with a Scion.

There's a lot of words I'd use to describe these cars...but "cute" doesn't really come to mind... ;)

That being said...Honda :)

Did see the news about Toyota halting production on their North American cars today? I'm sure you'll be checking it out if you're looking at cars right now...something about accelerators causing accidents and such. As much as my Camry has been awesome for me (it's a 1999 with over 250,000 miles and still going strong), I'm not sure I'd buy a Toyota right now. And I used to be a huge Toyota fan.

My vote is for the Civic :)

Katie - Yep.. I have been hearing about Toyota recalls and unsafe pedals.. I plan to do some lookin before we make any definite plans. Thanks!

Jasher - Here and I thought your Corolla would get the vote ;)
(ps. rule# 72 for researching cars states "While not a factor heavy enough to rule out an option forthwith, the Cuteness Factor must be weighed in and accounted for.")

I'm definitely voting for the Scion - cutest it most definitely is.

hmmm.. two votes for the Scion, huh. I have to admit, I'm more partial to the Suzuki.. hehe... but the Scion is definitely the coolest color!

I had a Honda Civic when I was in college ('94) and it was a great car, and very reliable. I probably would still be driving it if someone hadn't rear-ended me when I first moved to Chicago.

I also love Pontiac's but as a current Pontiac owner, I am concerned that it may be difficult to service in the future since GM is stopping their Pontiac line.

Ooooooh yeah.. I'd forgotten that GM was Pontiac's parent company. That one may get disqualified just for that; working in my Firm's bankruptcy department has made me very cautious about anything that smacks of it.....

FYI, my Honda Civic was a '94 - I graduated college much later.

Hehehehehe! Of course, of course.

Now, me, I'm thinking in terms of the American economy. I didn't used to always feel this way, but now days I'm in favor of supporting American companies. I belive Ford is the only American automaker that didn't ask for a handout thru all these bailouts (I tend to frown on corporate welfare, tho I'm sure Ford has been guilty of that in the past). And they actually turned a profit at last report. To me that says better business model and management. As far as "cute"? Maybe the Focus Coupe. Yeah, I know; not on your list. Oh, well.

BTW, Toyota's problem was a faulty gas pedal; pron to stick. That could be bad.

Aw.. now I feel unpatriotic. Actually, we considered more American options, but they were disqualified earlier for various reasons.
As for the Toyota sticky pedals, while I did see a blurb earlier today that indicated they've got a fix for that, I'm definitely going to do research before we actually consider those.

ooooo... So much to say.

1. The Toyota recall is due to a tendency for the gas petal to stick due to a build up of condensation. Which is WAY weird! This is NOT a problem with galvanic corrosion which is what I thought would be the problem. This problem is somewhat of a mystery and I look forward to finding out what actually is happening. It could lead to a break through in science!
2. The accelerator problem could extend beyond Toyota but hasn't been determined yet. I don't know for sure, but it stands to reason that the company that makes the petal has contracts with other car companies. Although, it was stated that the design is Toyota's and they were just hired to manufacture the parts. It just depends on what the underlying cause is.
3. I will be getting the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport (http://www.subaru.com/vehicles/impreza/outback-sport/index.html) as soon as I can have the cold heart required to get rid of our beloved Skeeter. Subaru is a company that has always produced high quality engineering and innovation with their engine designs. And the boxer engine they have become famous for is extremely reliable. They are quite uniquely awesome with their customer relations too.
4. The Impreza is by far the cutest.
5. I could keep going but I don't want to bore you.

In short, my vote is the Impreza. Yes, its not American but its great engineering. And the world is becoming a smaller place these days anyway. :)

Hehe.. I love all the info :) The Impreza is indeed a good one! And that pic of the sport is great.. it'd totally fit Henry.
We test drove a sedan today and as far as I could tell there weren't any drawbacks.
