Peer Pressure? Maybe...

So, October 27, 2009, "The Gathering Storm" was published. It happens to be the 12th of The Wheel of Time series. Now, I was unaware of this book, or even the pending publication, until several friends posted about it in various places when it came out. These friends are folks who's taste in books I respect and I was intrigued by their excitement and anticipation. So, I talked to a couple of them about it.. they were gobbling up this latest book and highly recommended the series.

I read a fair amount, or at least I always seem to be in the middle of several books, of mixed genres. For example, right now I'm in the middle of: "Eleanor Roosevelt; Vol. 1" (B.W.Cook), "Emma" (J.Austin) and "1776" (D.McCullough). All interesting, yes.. but it's been some time since I've read a "page turner".

I have attempted to read The Wheel of Time Series - way back in high school.. but I got through the first two and a half books and got tired of the characters running around and accomplishing little more than meeting new people. So I stopped. Apparently it was just a little too soon; it's at the very end of the third book where it REALLY starts to get exciting, or so I'm told.

Initially, the thought of taking THREE books to rev up a story was very off-putting; the author sounds long winded.. which makes me think of Terry Goodkind (which is uninspiring). But, recently, I was assured that The Wheel of Time was different (and better). AND bunches of people I personally know really like the series, and think I would like the series.. So, the other day I broke down and ordered the first book, "Eye of the World", on Amazon.

Today, I got the notification that it has been shipped. I'm actually very excited!!
I hope it comes soon.

I just finished TGS, and am eagerly awaiting the next book now.

I will warn you, Robert Jordan can get longwinded at times, but his characters are well written and you can relate to them (unlike Terry Goodkind). And he throws in enough twists and turns so his story isn't as predictable (also unlike Goodkind).

Some of the books later in the series can be maddening, since no resolution on certain sub-plots was reached, but since almost all of the books are out now (and by the time you get through the current 12, the next book may be out as well) you will suffer much less than the rest of us in this regard.

Meh. I read those. I quit cuz I found them predictable. I'm going to go against the crowd & say that, although I quit Goodkind for other reasons, I think his stories are superior. Hopefully, you'll think I'm wrong. ;D

Yes, Jake has some of these and was lamenting that TGS was coming out after he left. But he's hopeing that the one after it is out by the time he gets back so he'll have plenty of reading.
