Pushing Through to Success

Way back in December, my friend and I began our endeavor to build her a little free library. When we first set out, we figured the building could be done during the holiday break. Easy peasy! However, sickness and car troubles cropped up and things, partly done, were put on hold.

Finally it seemed that we could move forward; everyone was healthy and the cars were running again. So, we got together, in February, to start assembly.

It was exciting to watch the project make forward progress. We were both learning things and watching the fruits of our labors rise before our eyes.

Then, COVID came and the world closed down, and the project stalled out again.

However, we would not be deterred. Illinois was doing well keeping the COVID numbers in check, and so, taking into account the world conditions as they stood, we decided to seize the day, make the necessary adjustments, and move forward with things.

My garage isn't well ventilated, but she has a beautiful backyard with a picnic table. So, we masked up and hauled the things to her backyard and got to building!

Her little man was there too. He'd been doing his own ventures with woodworking, during the last few months, so he was happy to help.

Though the morning was a bit hot and more than a little humid, we finished our assembly! It's been such a long time coming, but she and I are excellent problem solvers and found ways to think outside the box. It was really lovely to hang out with my friend. And it felt so good to have this project done!

When building from my own sketches, there was always a chance the little library would look like something created by Dr. Seuss. But in the end, it really came together well; very sturdy and even nicely square!

Now, we turn this fabulous box of ours into a Tardis. I can hardly wait!

"Nicely square"; the ultimate test when dealing with wood. Well done!
