Gardening Time!

It's become a tradition that, come mid-May, it's time to plant my garden! Even waiting that long, this year there was a couple nights that I was a bit nervous, but the temperatures never got quite to freezing. Woo!

First, we put some dirt into our planters. This year I am trying an experiment. The internet told me that I could mix in some compost and other "dirt enhancers" into my old potting soil, so I did. We'll see how well that goes (I'm not 100% sure I got the ratios right, so it might be a little much and burn out all my plants.......)

Since we have our little Moon (who is a very into-it sort of kid), I decided that my low planter needed some extra reinforcement to better keep out inquisitive fingers. It's not exactly beautiful, but hey... sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

So, this year, Townshend got a little sunflower seed from his Sunday School class and it actually sprouted, so it got to be the very first things we put into our dirt.

Then we headed out to get our plants. Townshend was very concerned about carrying dirt in the trunk of our car, but we all made it through without any major spills.

Here is everything all in place. Strawberries on the top, flowers underneath. And in my low planter, I put the basil with the sunflower, a cherry tomato plant as well as some morning glories that just might grow and hopefully will climb the lattice.

The morning glories have sprouted, that's a good sign!!

So far, so good! Wish us luck!

City gardening-way cool! Do you ever get birds in your deck? Hope they leave your strawberries alone!

We actually have a bunch of birds living under all the decks - I think there are four nests this year. They're getting inquisitive... I keep meaning to go get some pinwheels for my strawberry planter.. I should really get on that.. heh.
