Maybe This Time It'll Live?

So, I've always had an affinity for string-of-pearl plants. Succulents are nice anyway, 'cuz they're supposed to be heartier than flowering plants (I think). But this particular one is extra special since it reminds me of my grandma; she had one growing over her sink going back as long as I can remember. Occasionally, when I get feeling nostalgic, I think I should try growing one too.

A couple of years ago, I found one and made an attempt at keeping a string-of-pearls plant in my apartment with very little sun. It didn't make it.

Our current place doesn't have a kitchen window, but there's a sliding glass door that lets in some good light so, this past summer, I figured it was time to try again. But, again, I really had a tough time finding one here in Chicago.. none of my local places had one. The really-big-has-everything plant store in Chicago is way, way on the other side of the city from me and has a horrendous parking situation... so, I put off getting the plant until I could pop up to my folks' house in Wisconsin; the plant shop near them had a string-of-pearls plant and parking is abundant.

Cut to Thanksgiving weekend. I found one!

This poor plant has had a rough time of it though. I got it, and hung it in the kitchen at my folks' house for while we were there and, of course, forgot to grab it as we headed home at the end of the weekend. AAAAAARRRRGH!!

Fortuitously, my sister was coming to town the following weekend.. Though a massive hand-off, incorporating Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois, my fabulous little string of pearls finally got to my house. Yay! (thanks, everybody)

And also, fortuitously, I had some leftover potting soil in my garage so I could repot this plant without any further troubles. Though, I did have to wait a day for the soil to warm up to inside-room temperature (gotta give this little guy a fighting chance at least!). So, I put some in a bucket and let it sit next to my furnace for a day before attempting the replanting.

Here it is, in my lovely pot, in a sunny spot.

It's been a little over a week and it's not dead yet, so that's good.. right? Now to hope that the roots will take, even in the winter...... Wish me luck!

Good luck to you and that well traveled little plant! I hope it makes it. And I really like the pot you put it in, too!

That looks lovely! I'd like to get one too, but my house is so dark that only the very lowest light plants make it. Maybe the next place. Love your pot!
