Patio Gardening!

One of the great things about this place is our outdoor patio. It's big enough for a few bits of furniture AND it's south-facing so I have great hopes for some gardening fun.

Last summer, we didn't really do much to enhance the patio; mostly just a table to hold the umbrella for shade. This year, I have grand plans. Starting with a little three-pocket planter. I found an absolutely perfect one on Pinterest. However, like so many on there, the link was a dud and though it promised plans, I never could find any. Though, here's a picture of one that I originally fell in love with:

So, in the end, I opted to get creative with this one that I could find plans for and was sort of similar looking:

First, cram a bunch of wood in a tiny car:

Next, break out the jigsaw:

Here are all the pieces, cut, sanded and drilled:

Start assembly:

And, voila! A three-pocket, corner planter box! Woo!

Next came some extra color. I really like the weathered look, and it's easiest achieved by staining with tea and vinegar. First, I boiled up a vat of Earl Gray tea.

Here it is, all painted with tea. Also, while I was at it, I pulled out my the little side table from the patio to give it a weathered make-over too:

Once it was dry, I realized that I must've gotten treated wood 'cuz the tea and vinegar didn't do much besides make it look dirty. Ah well, what's done is done, so I forged ahead and lined the pockets with some burlap and - FINALLY - it was all ready for some dirt!

Boom! Here it is with some plants. I've just got to figure out what to plant in the third square. I had been nurturing these little poppy seedlings intending to transplant them when they're a little bigger, but then Google told me they were more spring or fall flowers (and I'm still a little unclear on whether planting perennials in planters is a bad idea or not). So, I'll just have to see how things play out.

So, perhaps not perfect, but I'm excited to give it a go. Here's hoping for a fruitful summer!
