Projects of Organization

Saturdays are the big day of productivity, over here. On Saturday, we menu plan, grocery shop, clean bathrooms, sweep, vacuum, mop, do miscellaneous food prep to make weekday dinners go more quickly, take out the recyclables  do laundry, etc. But, lately, I've been thinking that it'd be good to spread things out through the week a little more evenly, to allow Saturday to have more room for fun.

One of the blogs I follow is all about ideas to help to be organized. There are all sorts of creative ideas coupled with gorgeous photos and many of the suggestions are simple and DIY (pretty pictures always make projects seem more fun, even organizational ones). As someone who lives in a cute, city apartment, I love seeing what other people come up with for working with smaller spaces, especially when I can see ways for them to help me with my home.

On that blog, the other week, this blog post was featured. There are lots of cool ideas incorporated in this post, but what really jumped out at me was the Sticky-Note To-Do board; I can totally see that being a handy tool for spreading out our chores throughout the week.

So, I chatted with Hubby, to see what his thoughts on the matter were: might it be a workable idea for us? We agreed that it had potential and we should go ahead and give it a try.

So, I headed to the thrift store to get a frame to use as the foundation for my Sticky-Note To-Do board.
so many to choose from!
After a little deliberation, I declared this one the winner; not only was it solid and in good condition, but I really liked the current color of the frame (thus saving me from having to figure out how to make spray painting work in the winter). Score!

It's long been my philosophy that mundane things are better when made interesting or lovely (a "spoonful of sugar" theory, I suppose), and this silly To-Do board was no exception. Since the frame was good to go, all that remained was finding cool paper to be the background.

Lots of places sell cool papers, but my favorite go-to spot is Target, and in this quest for cool paper, it did not let me down.
just some of the selection
Now I had all the pieces, next came assembly and creating labels. The beauty of having a cool paper behind glass is that if I get tired of this background, it's no sweat to switch it up later!  Here it is all assembled:

So, with this most attractive new system, I'm already feeling all sorts of productive and foresee all sorts of potential for fun Saturdays in my future!

How's it working? Thought I left a comment last time I was here, cuz this looks cool. But now I'm curious: how does this work?

It's actually working nicely. When I'm done with a chore, I crinkle up the post-it and toss it away (a mighty satisfying feeling). If I don't get to something, then I just move it to the next day. Seeing them pile up is motivation for me to be sure I do stuff. Too much gets me feeling like it's insurmountable often leading to me doing nothing, so this way it's broken down into lots of little things and it works better for me. (playing mind tricks on myself) :)
Then, on Sunday night or Monday morning, I fill out new post-its for the week and we begin again!

Heh heh heh.....I see potential for putting Phil's honey-do list in a more "inviting" format! Thanks for the terrific idea! (P.S. Phil just informed me that it was on your wall when we came to visit this past Saturday. Somehow I missed it, but he seemed to like it! Heh heh heh...
