It's Done! (finally)

Way back in January, I talked about this project I was "so excited" to get started on. In December I had gotten a Dremel and, shortly after that post in January, I drilled holes in all my shells (collected way back in October). However, after the drilling was done, I sort of stalled out in the assembly.

I had done some research on seashell mobiles and nothing that I was seeing was looking like anything I had in mind. Some were straight, some were round, some were long, some were short.. single string, multiple strings.. but it took me a while to figure out what exactly it was that I wanted.

Eventually, I settled on making a round one. I set about searching for a round thing to be the top.. I thought it would be awesome if I could find a braided stick wreath that was just the right size, but multiple trips to multiple craft stores proved fruitless, and back to square one I went. In the end I opted to make my own from some twine/wire stuff I found.

Once the circle was created I was faced with a conundrum: How to affix the shells? In one of my many trips to the craft store, I found some wind chimes which, happily, were on sale and solved my problem! I took the metal ring from the chimes and (removing pretty much everything but the the hook and base ring) re-purposed it for my mobile. I was so glad it fit so perfectly!

Once I had this metal ring with perfectly spaced, pre-made rings for hanging the strings, I was able to move forward really quickly with hanging the shells; finishing this part in about an afternoon.

Finally came the hanging part. I ran out to the hardware store to find some eye hooks and installed it in my bathroom (which already had a nautical theme going on with my fish vase which I love). I'm so happy with how it turned out! I love the spiral pattern; it's the perfect souvenir!

That looks awesome! I love how "tall" it is and the braided part at the top. Excellent!
