All throughout the house, as we've decided on colors and things for all the rooms, I generally have the stronger opinions on things, but I always try to make it as collaborative as I can. This cabinet is destined for the wall of the bathroom of my bedroom. Since this is as much Hubby's space as mine, I thought it would be perfect if I could make it a blend of him and me as well.
I love the look of old paper used as lining inside of things - drawers, organizor jars.. and I thought it'd be great inside this cabinet as well. So, I picked the outside color and then asked Hubby if there was a book he'd be willing to donate to the cause. And he did!
This book is an old one from his grad school days. One that he says he never really read and, at this point, it's so out of date as to be basically obsolete. It's perfect! We'll have a fabulous color for me and words of finance for him - a fitting combination.
I admit, it felt very strange, initially, to rip out pages from a book. I've recycled sheet music for art projects before but, somehow, tearing up a hardcover book seemed worse. But, for the art, I persevered.
So, bit by bit, gluing piece by piece, I jigsawed the pages into an artistic arrangement and covered the inside of my cabinet:
Then, when I was so tantalizingly close to being done, my bottle of Mod Podge ran out.. on a Saturday night, so I had to (try) to be patient until I could get to the craft store in Monday. (I went first thing)
But I survived the wait and, before too much longer, it was done! I love it.
Once it was dry, I brushed on some waterproof varnish all around. This way it'll, hopefully, better withstand the moisture that comes with hanging in a bathroom.
My project is in the home stretch! Now, all that's left is to touch up a few spots on the outside and it really is time to decide how I'm going to get hexagons on the sides. Do I paint them on?? Cut out shapes from paper and glue them on?? Choices, choices!

That's funny, how you felt tearing up the book. I once had a job working for a library when I was in college. My job was tearing up old books, published copies of the Congressional Record, which by law have to be "destroyed" and can't just be tossed. When I first started I'd stand on the loading dock of the library, tear up the books, and drop them right in a dumpster but people in the neighborhood saw me and complained to the library about "the guy ripping up books" out behind the library. So they moved me indoors. Good times. Your project looks like it's progressing wonderfully!
That's funny.. folks trying to be helpful while you're just doing your job.. hehe.
