Saturday Adventure

So, you may or may not have guessed but, trains are a pretty big deal around here. Really, all public transportation.. and garbage trucks.. school buses. When I stop and think about it, I'm really inspired by my kids' easy joy; it's hard to think of something that brings me equally such easy and simple joy.

Floating around on Facebook a while back, there was that story of the famous violin player, Joshua Bell, who played in a busy subway one morning during rush period. Very few people stopped, only one person recognized him, but the ones who paid the most attention were the little kids. (This was a social experiment questioning if people would stop to notice beauty in an unexpected and inappropriate time/place and the grownups failed pretty solidly.)

To be fair, not everybody has the luxury of a flexible start to their day, so stopping to listen on their way to work may genuinely have not been an option. However, in this season of my life, I don't often have such stringent constraints on my time, so lately I've been trying to be more mindful. And also, to be more flexible and willing to stop and notice whatever my kids are taken with ('cuz they do see the world with fresher eyes than me.)

To this end, when I had a simple errand to run on a day when Hubby and Townshend had the car, I decided to take Moon on a Saturday Adventure. We walked a few blocks further than necessary, to the next busy street over, hopped on a bus which took us to a train which took us to our destination, and all over again going home. It was a crack up to see how charmed folks were at his fresh enthusiasm for riding a city bus. Pretty much the entire ride Moon kept repeating, "Bus! Ride bus! Bus! Bus!"

Townshend was really bummed that he would miss such an adventure, so I said I'd take some video to share.

Turns out, taking video while pushing a stroller and corralling a 2 year old is no easy task. But, imperfect and incomplete (no bus footage), Townshend was very pleased. We may or may not have watched this a few times in a row.

When we lived in the Los Angeles area I rode the bus to work so I had a monthly bus pass. Kids your age rode free so now and then I would take you and your big sister for random bus rides. You guys always enjoyed it so and I had fun taking you. Those were good times.
