While I've never been able to really get into Pinterest, I am definitely an avid follower of many blogs - cooking blogs, parenting blogs (of various philosophies), travel blogs, creative blogs... several. Following these blogs has gotten me thinking about 1st birthday parties. Crazy? Maybe. But, all the same, here we are. More than two months before the event and I'm already mulling party ideas and thinking about what to get the little man for his birthday.
First birthdays are very silly things; inevitably, they bring about an enormous hullabaloo that the actual guest of honor hardly registers. I've always joked that I'd get my baby a shoebox for his gift.. or a bottle of bubbles. But then I saw this one blog post and I changed my mind.
In that post, the sensory boards were affixed to the walls in the kids' room. However, as a renter, I decided that I wanted something that had a little smaller footprint and would be more portable (and less damaging). So, I decided to go with a sensory table instead.
Off to the thrift store! And there I found this gem:
Sturdy, well constructed (and easily dismantled), small and the simplicity makes it perfect as a blank canvas.
Next, for some color. Enter spray paint! (i love spray paint)
Now, the great reveal!
Here it is just finished with phase one; ready to have some cool things to touch and feel and see added to it.
For a start, I switched out the old drawer knob an added on with some texture and the awesome star. The top of the table is painted with chalkboard paint, ready for all his masterpieces.
Also, I added some color inside the drawer, just for giggles:
Next, I'll start browsing hardware stores to find eye-catching bits and pieces to add to spice it up even further.... ooooh, the possibilities!
So, perhaps July is early to start with thinking of gifts for an October birthday.. but this way I'm not rushed and my creative juices like it best that way.
